چکیده
We analyze price dispersion using panel data from a large comparison site. use past pricing behavior to instrument for potential endogeneity of firms select into certain product markets. Our main result is that greater adjustment costs in even e-commerce markets where cost are thought be negligible. Although the impact on became weaker over time, causal effect still present at end our observation period. results robust many alternative empirical specifications. also control range explanations dispersion, such as search cost, service differentiation, obfuscation, vertical restraints, and market structure.

Basu (2006) argues that the prevalence of 99 cent prices in shops can be explained with rational consumers who disregard the rightmost digits of the price. This bounded rational behaviour leads to a Bertrand equilibrium with positive markups. We use data from an Austrian price comparison site and find results highly compatible with Basu’s theory. We can show that price points in particular pric...

We study optimal price setting by a monopolist in an in nite horizon model with stochastic costs, moderate ination, and costly price adjustment. For realistic parameters, chosen to replicate observed frequencies of price changes, the model ts numerically several empirical regularities. In particular, price reductions are larger but less frequent than price increases, and prices respond consid...
